چکیده

The low-frequency peaked BL Lac (LBL) object BL Lacertae was observed with the MAGIC telescope from 2005 August to December (22.2 hr), and from 2006 July to September (26.0 hr). A very high energy (VHE) γ-ray signal was discovered with a 5.1 σ excess in the 2005 data. Above 200 GeV, an integral flux of (0.6± 0.2) × 10 cm s was measured, corresponding to approximately 3% of the Crab flux. The differential spectrum between 150 and 900 GeV is rather steep, with a photon index of −3.6± 0.5. The light curve shows no significant variability during the observations in 2005. For the first time a clear detection of VHE γ-ray emission from an LBL object was obtained. The 2006 data show no significant excess. This drop in flux follows the observed trend in optical activity.

Analysis of Five Fermi–LAT LBL/IBL BL Lac Objects: Examining the June 2011 γ–ray Flare of BL Lacertae

Constructing a unification scenario for active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a forefront field of study in contemporary astrophysics. These highly variable and energetic objects produce radiation in wavelengths from radio through γ–ray. As more detectors of the most energetic electromagnetic regimes are developing, so is our knowledge of the emission models responsible for this cosmic radiation. Bla...

Hadronic Production of Tev Gamma Ray Flares from Blazars

We propose that TeV γ-ray emission from blazars is produced by collisions near the line of sight of high energy jet protons with gas targets (“clouds”) from the broad emission-line region (BLR). Intense TeV γ-ray flares (GRFs) are produced when BLR clouds cross the line of sight close to the black hole. The model reproduces the observed properties of the recently reported very short and intense...

X–ray Observations of BL Lacertae During 1997 Outburst and its Association with Quasar-like Characteristics

This paper reports on the X–ray emission from BL Lacertae during its July 1997 outburst as observed with the Rossi X–ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), compares the RXTE data to previous measurements, and interprets the overall electromagnetic emission in the context of the currently popular theoretical models. The source is bright and variable, with the 2 – 10 keV flux approximately two to three and ...

The classification of BL Lacertae objects: the Ca H&K break

We investigate why BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) have values of the Ca H&K break (a stellar absorption feature) lower than low-power radio galaxies and if its use is justified to separate the two classes. For this purpose we relate this parameter to the radio and optical core emissions, as well as to the X-ray powers, for a sample of ∼ 90 radio sources. We find that the Ca H&K break value decre...

Unification of all blazars

The overall spectra (SED) of blazars, from radio to γ–ray energies, seem to obey well defined trends, with a continuity of properties between blazars of different classes. To quantify this statement we can either investigate their observed properties (see Fossati et al., this volume), or try to determine their intrinsic physical parameters by applying specific models, and trying to fit their SE...
